Skin care. It’s a never-ending topic that can cause confusion and anxiety. Many people either don’t take care of their skin or use the wrong products for their skin type, or OVER CARE for their skin… yes, there is such a thing. I am in no way a professional on skincare, nor do I claim to be. I would just like to discuss what works for me in hopes that it may work for you. Now that that’s out of the way, let’s get into it.
In my opinion, there are typically 4 categories that your skin will fall under: dry skin, normal, combination, and oily skin. Some people may fall into 2 categories at the same time or change categories during different times of the year, or with hormone changes, or just the weather, in general. Within these categories, there are subcategories like sensitive skin, acne prone skin, etc. You may have texture, large pores, redness, etc. I know, with my skin, I am combination to oily (especially in my T-zone) and somewhat drier on my cheeks. Since having my baby, I have gotten the pleasure of having a increased amount of oil production in my T-zone and dryness in my cheeks (thank you hormones!)
No matter what type of skin you were blessed with, you HAVE to take care of it! It’s the only skin you have… Although your skin will regenerate itself approximately every 27 days, proper skin care is essential to maintain the health and vitality of it. It’s the largest organ your body has and is your first line of defense to protect your others organs. So why wouldn’t you take care of it?!
Your skin care regimen does not have to be a long, drawn out process that makes your stomach turn at the thought of it. It can be as simple or as complex as you want. But having clean, protected skin is vital to your health. Clean skin helps protect against skin conditions such as acne or dermatitis. Protecting your skin can help prevent early aging and skin cancers.
Never, and I mean NEVER, sleep in your makeup. Your skin has to be clean and be able to breath. Leaving your makeup on while you sleep not only causes clogged pores, but can cause bacteria to transfer to your pillow, which then you will be playing “pass the bacteria” back and forth from your pillow to you face! (eeewwwwww) I personally LOVE the feeling of taking my makeup off at the end of the day and feeling my skin take a breath of fresh air. I use Neutrogena Makeup Remover wipes and Garnier Micellar Water for Sensitive Skin (you can purchase both of these at any drugstore, Walmart, Target, etc.). I use to use the Mary Kay Eye Makeup Remover, but I found that these drugstore options work just as well.
I wash my face twice a day, morning and night, EVERYDAY. I personally use the Mary Kay TimeWise face wash for combination to oily skin. It has little microbeads in it that help to give you a deep, yet gentle clean, and unclog pores. I don’t feel like it overdries my skin or makes it feel “tight”. I firmly believe in washing my face in the morning and at night because in the morning after you wake up, you may have drool on your face (or is it just me?) and bacteria from your pillows and sheets. I don’t care how clean your pillows and sheets are, there is still bacteria on them. It’s everywhere, people! At night, you are “washing the day away” (so to speak) by washing your makeup off, sweat, etc. and basically hitting the “reset” button on your skin.
No matter your skin type, you must moisturize your skin. Especially my oily people. (SAAAAYYY WHHAAAAATTTT?!) Yes! Moisturizing your skin helps prevent premature aging and tricks your skin into thinking it has produced enough oil, so production is slowed. Now, it’s not an overnight process. It takes consistency for this to happen. If you are an oily skin type, or even combo, you would benefit from an oil free, lightweight moisturizer. You will know it’s oil free because it will say so on the bottle (you’re welcome). I personally use Mary Kay TimeWise Moisturizer for Combo to oily skin. If you consistantly cleanse and moisturize your skin, overtime, you will notice your oil production slow and your beautiful, youthful skin shine through.
I am a firm believer in weekly face masks. I LOVE using clay masks to help unclog pores. Sephora, Mary Kay, and Glow all make incredible clay masks that help with oil control, clogged pores, and brightening of your skin. I do “facial mask Wednesday” at my house. Every Wednesday, I put on a face mask depending on how my skin is acting at the time. If my pores seem large, in charge, and as big as a barge, I will put on a mask made for unclogging and shrinking pores. If my nose is blackhead central, I’ll use an old school Biore Nose Strip or the charcoal black peel off mask that has taken the internet by storm. For my dry skin honeys, I have dry skin days too, I’m obsessed with Sephora’s paper masks. They have one for every skin type. I usually use a paper mask to help rehydrate my skin after using a mask that pulls out oils and unclogs pores so my skin doesn’t feel the need to over-produce oil to compensate for the oil taken away.
This is probably the most important of all for your skin care regimen, no matter what it may be. SUNSCREEN. I cannot express how important it is to protect your skin from the sun! Applying sunscreen to your face daily is crucial to decrease your risk of skin cancer. Now you may be thinking, “but, Jessi, I work indoors and never go outside. I don’t need sunscreen!” Well, bad news, my friend. Whenever you walk outside of your house to go to your car, you are exposed to sunlight. Whenever you are driving in your car on the way to work, that warmth you feel on your cheek through the window while driving, is sunlight. You are exposed to it more than you think, and it doesn’t take much sunlight exposure to cause skin cancer. Taking precautions will help prevent this. I personally use the Mary Kay Daytime Serum Facial Sunscreen in their duo pack. You don’t have to purchase the most expensive facial sunscreen known to man! There are plenty of oil free, inexpensive options out there, and purchasing sunscreen is a heck of a lot cheaper than going to the doctor to get skin cancers removed. Think about that!
